An Overview of Building information management/modeling (BIM) in Kenya and UK

The following topics shall be discussed in the presentation:
1. The problems contributing to inefficiency in the construction industry This shall be discussed with regard to globally prevalent issues and their relationship with the unique context of Kenya

2 The evolution of digital construction across the world: A broad introduction to the construction technologies and approaches which have been developed over recent years and those that are planned for the future. An introduction to concepts such as Industry 4.0, BIM, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Digital twinning will be provided.
a) BIM and its different maturity levels Without going into specific proprietary software, this section will explain what
constitutes the different maturity levels of BIM and thus reveal the level that most consultancies in Kenya are currently operating at.
b) Benefits of BIM and information management The opportunities BIM provides in facilitating information management will be explained to demonstrate how it can be employed to reduce construction inefficiencies.

3. Potential barriers to BIM uptake in Kenya This section shall highlight the barriers which consultants in Kenya and the UK identified during my research which have prevented the uptake of the different construction technologies in the past and which may restrict any future progression.

4. A guide to BIM/Information Management adoption by SME’s in Kenya Information management, the concept behind BIM, will be explained. As a result, it will be shown how consultancies can continue to perform their functions efficiently while transitioning from analog to digital construction without the initial requirement to purchase expensive proprietary software. This section will also outline the steps a firm will need to take, not just to realize the benefits of BIM in their projects, but to enable them to compete at a global level.
